The Scholarship Advantage: Why School Selection Is the Most Important Funding Decision You Will Make

Every year, thousands of African students apply to schools abroad with the same dream: a world-class education, a life-changing opportunity, a future they have worked incredibly hard to build. And every year, far too many of them arrive at the funding stage and hit a wall that feels impossible to climb.
The scholarships exist. The funding is out there. So why do so many students miss it?
The answer, more often than not, comes down to one decision made early in the process, school selection.
Most students choose a school based on rankings, reputation, or familiarity. Very few choose based on funding strategy. And that gap, between where students apply and where the money actually is, is costing people the opportunities they deserve.
What School Selection Actually Has to Do With Funding
Here is something the glossy university brochures will not tell you. Not all schools fund international students equally. Some institutions have significantly more generous scholarship budgets. Some programs, within the same university, carry more funding than others. Some application rounds release more money than others. And some countries, right now, are structurally more accessible for African students than others.
Knowing how to read these variables and using them to build your school list intentionally is the difference between applying and being funded.
Why We Are Doing This
At Edward Consulting, we have walked hundreds of African students through this process. We have seen the patterns. We know where the funding is, how to position a profile to access it, and what mistakes cost students the most. And we have partnered with Opportunities for Everyone — a community dedicated to helping people access life-changing personal and professional opportunities — to share that knowledge with as many students as possible.
On June 24th at 7PM, we are hosting the first session of a free four-part webinar series titled Winning Scholarships and Building a Global Future as an African International Student. And this is what the full series looks like:
